Welcome to Year 6
Year 6 is an important year of challenges, surprises, growing up and preparing for the inevitable move to secondary school. The children will undertake vital roles throughout the school, giving them a status coupled with responsibility. As the oldest children at Saint Bernadette’s, we look to these pupils to set an excellent example for the rest of the school by providing positive role models of behaviour and learning.
Mrs Whelan and Mrs Berry will assist me in providing the children with a broad, balanced curriculum and to prepare them for their future education. We encourage everyone to reflect, in greater depth, on themselves as learners and as considerate members of society. As secondary school is fast approaching, we encourage every member of year six to be self-reliant and self-sufficient, taking full responsibility for organising themselves and being punctual with homework.
Integral to our teaching is the development of pupils’ self-assessment and reflection so that they know how to move their learning forward. Year 6 children will sit the SATS tests in Maths, Reading, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation in May. Throughout the preparation for their forthcoming tests, we encourage the children to judge themselves against their own previous performance and to celebrate the progress that they have made, rather than comparing themselves with others.
As always, the pupils have all been assigned their ‘buddies’ from Reception Class, but due to the current Covid situation we will have to think of new and imaginative ways to help the little ones settle in and develop their social skills.
Above all, even in these strange circumstances, we aspire to provide a productive and enjoyable year for the children, enabling them to leave with a genuine sense of pride and achievement!
